This video on the Core77 website shows us inside the factory of German pencil manufacturers Staedtler. Amazing! What makes up a Staedtler pencil? A cedar casing, a “lead” or core made from graphite and clay (colour pencil cores are made from pigment, clay and wax), glue (to stick the two sides of the pencil “sandwich” together), paint, varnish, foil lettering, aluminium ferrule, rubber eraser. Take a look – a production line can be a thing of beauty!
